The Centre for Housing Research’s role is to improve the management of the social and affordable housing sectors through research, training and policy advice. It is a joint initiative between the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, local authorities and the voluntary and co-operative housing sector. It is administered through the Institute of Public Administration.
Its mission is informing housing policy and practice through high-quality training, research and analysis.
Until January 2006, the Centre was known as the Housing Unit, which was established in 1998.
