The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DEHLG) and the Department of Education and Science commissioned this research report on students in the private rented sector. The Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) requested the Centre for Housing Research (CHR) to carry out this work. CHR surveyed 1383 students in the private rented sector in the greater Dublin area, and 740 students who were not in the private rented sector but who also lived in the greater Dublin area. Dublin was the focus as it was identified by the Union of Students in Ireland as the area with the most accommodation pressure. Students Unions from outside Dublin were given an opportunity to provide any commentary. This report outlines the results of these surveys. Candy Murphy & Associates carried out a review of student accommodation in Europe, which is detailed in the latter half of this report.
